Welcome to 1st and 2nd Grade!
Reading:
Here are the reading strategies we have learned so far:
* Stretchy Snake teaches our students to stretch out all the sounds in a word to sound it out the best they can
* Eagle Eye teaches our students to use the pictures to help us decode the words
* Lips the Fish teaches our students to sound out the first few sounds of an unknown word, read the rest of the sentence, and then try the word again.
*Chunky Monkey teaches our students to chunk the word into small parts to make it easier to sound out
* Flippy Dolphin teaches our students to try a vowel sound and if it does not sound right they need to try the vowels second sound
* Peekin Poodle teaches our students to cross check when reading. Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense?
* Skippy Frog teaches our students to skip the word, read the rest of the sentence, and come back to the word
* Tryin' Lion teaches our students to try again
* Helpful Kangaroo is our last strategy. This strategy helps the students ask for help after they have tried all other strategies.
Writing:
Thank you to all the parents that came to our publisher party. The kids love to share their work!
We have now started our autobiography writing first drafts. Like all of our writing, it will go through multiple drafts and revisions before we can publish.
Math:
We are starting Chapter 10 that covers mental math and estimation.
First Grader's math information can be located on Mrs. K's website
Expedition:
Our expedition is Around the World. We will kick off this expedition with Mapping. We will then move into elements of culture and where our families come from. Our Expert Culture is India. We will become experts on India and celebrate, educate, and appreciate their culture at the Celebration of Learning. We do have a couple fieldworks during this expedition, but it is mainly guest experts that will educate us on different cultures around the world. This expedition helps cover the remainder of our Social Studies Standards.
